What’s Next?

The picture hangs on the wall with the words "I see a light in the darkness." It's quite an adventure.

As writers, we learn it’s a lot of work creating something out of nothing. We stare at a blank page. Our heads fill with ideas; itchy fingers hover over the keyboard. There’s an adventure in there somewhere.

And then…nothing

In a bum mood, we go to bed, drift off to la la land, and then bam! That perfect sentence wedges its way in. We race down to that cluttered desk covered in post-it notes, and the words flow…until we realize it’s morning and work is calling. Eek!

After many sleepless nights and strong cups of coffee, a first draft appears. That’s when the dreaded editing begins. Happy-go-lucky writers think: I’ll run through it once and it’ll be done. A masterpiece, right?

Nope.

The bazillionth edit comes along and suddenly it’s like your teacher at the end of a high school English exam yelling, “Put your pencils down!”

You hand this precious manuscript you’ve been slaving over to professionals who ruthlessly tear it apart like a dog with a chew toy. The ingrates hand you what’s left and demand you edit it again.

Does it sound dark? It’s difficult. The upside?

Literally millions of dollars! Maybe in some banana republic currency… Seriously, though, seeing the fruits of your labor in print. Holding that first bound copy. Knowing someone other than you and your cousin Bartholomew enjoyed the story. Priceless.

Like anything in life, if you aren’t enjoying it, why are you doing it?
